What is the difference between VCE and VCE VM? ▾
VCE is the academic pathway, leading to an ATAR and competitive university entry. VCE VM (Vocational Major) is a career-focused certificate within the VCE framework that emphasises practical learning, VET qualifications and direct transition to employment or TAFE. Both are recognised, equally valid pathways to a successful future. The right choice depends on a student's learning style, interests and post-school goals.
How many subjects do students need to complete VCE? ▾
Students must complete a minimum of 16 units over Years 11 and 12, including at least three Units 3–4 sequences, with at least one from the English group. Most students complete 22–24 units — typically five or six subjects per year. Students should discuss their program with the Senior School Sub School Leader to ensure their program meets both VCE requirements and their personal pathway goals.
How is the ATAR calculated? ▾
The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is calculated from a student's scaled study scores in English plus their best three other subjects (or two plus a VET contribution). Study scores are scaled to account for the difficulty of each subject's candidature. The ATAR represents a student's rank relative to all Year 12 completers in Victoria. ATAR is not the only pathway to university.
What is a study score and how does it work? ▾
A study score is a number between 0 and 50 indicating a student's performance relative to all other students who studied that subject statewide in that year. The median study score is 30. A study score of 40+ places a student in approximately the top 9% of all students in that subject across Victoria. Study scores are used in ATAR calculations.
What is VET and how does it work alongside VCE? ▾
VET (Vocational Education and Training) programs lead to nationally recognised qualifications (Certificate II, III or IV). VET can be studied alongside VCE or VCE VM. Some VET programs are available on-site at Rochester Secondary College; others are delivered at TAFE or through Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) on a set day each week. VET results can contribute to the ATAR through the VET contribution score.
What is Head Start and how does a student apply? ▾
Head Start is Rochester Secondary College's school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SBAT) program. Students work in paid employment with a registered employer for a minimum of 13 hours per week, while completing their VCE VM certificate at school. Students earn income, gain a vocational qualification and progress toward a trade. Applications are made through the Head Start Coordinator, Andrew Knight. Early application is recommended.
Can a student switch pathway once they have started? ▾
Pathway changes are possible in some circumstances, particularly if considered early in Year 11. Any pathway change should be discussed as soon as possible with the Careers and Pathways Leader (Wendy McKenzie) and the Senior School Sub School Leader (Steven Warren). The earlier the conversation, the more options remain available.
What ATAR score is needed for specific university courses? ▾
ATAR requirements vary by university, course and year. ATARs are not fixed — they change each year based on the number of applicants. Students should check current ATAR cut-offs directly with universities or through the VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) website at vtac.edu.au. Wendy McKenzie can help students research course requirements.
Do students need an ATAR to go to university? ▾
No. Many Victorian universities offer non-ATAR entry pathways including portfolio entry, special entry access schemes (SEAS), TAFE pathway programs (Diploma to Degree), mature-age entry and direct VET credit recognition. Students should discuss post-school goals with Wendy McKenzie to understand all the options available, including pathways that do not require an ATAR.
When do students submit their Year 11–12 subject selections? ▾
Subject selection timelines are communicated through Compass and at the Senior School Information Evening, typically held in Term 3 of Year 10. Students should attend this evening and discuss choices with subject teachers, the sub school leader and Wendy McKenzie before finalising their selections. Do not leave this conversation until Term 4 — some subjects have prerequisites or minimum enrolment requirements.
