What subjects are compulsory in Year 7? ▾
All Year 7 subjects are compulsory: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, Visual Arts, Indonesian Language, Technology, Food Studies and ICT. Year 7 is designed to give every student a broad, balanced introduction to secondary education.
What subjects are compulsory in Year 8? ▾
Year 8 core subjects are: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, Visual Arts and Technology. The Year 7 specialist subjects (Indonesian, Food Studies and ICT) are not offered in Year 8, allowing for deeper engagement with the remaining core areas.
How does assessment and reporting work at Rochester Secondary College? ▾
Reports are issued each term and accessed through Compass. Condensed progress reports are provided at the end of Terms 1 and 3. Full semester reports are provided at the end of Terms 2 and 4. Parent-teacher interviews are held at the end of Terms 1 and 3.
What is Compass and how do we access it? ▾
Compass is our school management platform where families can access their child's reports, timetable, attendance records and school communications. Login details are provided at the start of the school year. Please contact the school office if you experience any difficulty accessing Compass.
How can we support our child's learning at home? ▾
The most impactful things families can do are: ensure your child has a regular, quiet study space at home; encourage daily reading; monitor homework through Compass; attend parent-teacher interviews; and maintain open communication with the school about any concerns that arise.
What happens if my child needs extra support? ▾
Rochester Secondary College has a range of student support services. In the first instance, speak with your child's classroom teacher. Our Learning Support team can provide additional assistance for students who need it. Please contact the school office to discuss your child's individual needs.
What co-curricular activities are available? ▾
Rochester Secondary College offers a range of co-curricular activities including school sport, performing arts opportunities, leadership programs and community events. A current list of activities is available from the school office and on our website at www.rochsec.vic.edu.au.
When does my child start choosing their own subjects? ▾
Subject selection begins in Year 9, when students choose elective subjects for the first time. This is an exciting step in personalising your child's education. Full details are included in the Rochester Secondary College Middle School Handbook, available from the school office.
