RSC — Middle School FAQ
How many electives does my child choose in Year 9?
In Year 9, students complete three elective blocks across the year — six semester-length elective subjects in total. Each block runs for one semester, except for Indonesian (Distance Education) and Duke of Edinburgh, which are both full-year commitments and count as two elective units each.
Are there requirements about which electives students must choose?
Yes. Students must complete at least one elective from the Arts area and at least one from Technology across the year. Only one HPE or Food elective may be selected. If choosing Duke of Edinburgh or Indonesian, these take both semester slots for one block. Final subject placements depend on student numbers and timetabling.
What happens if my child cannot get their first choice elective?
Subject placements depend on student numbers and timetabling constraints. Where a first choice is unavailable, the school works with students and families to find the most appropriate alternative. Students should list several preferences when making selections.
How does Year 10 connect to VCE subject selection?
Year 10 elective choices can influence which VCE subjects a student is best prepared for. For example, Year 10 History prepares students directly for VCE Modern History; Creative Visual Design connects to VCE Visual Communication Design. We encourage students to think ahead when choosing Year 10 electives.
Can my child fast-track into VCE units in Year 10?
In some circumstances, high-achieving students may begin VCE units in Year 10. This is assessed individually and requires teacher recommendation and principal approval. Please speak with the Middle School Sub School Leader to explore this option.
What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is a globally recognised self-development program. At Rochester Secondary College, students work toward the Bronze Award, completing sections in Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Skill Development and an Adventurous Journey. Places are limited and an application process applies.
What support is available to help choose subjects?
Rochester Secondary College provides subject selection guidance through information sessions, individual teacher consultations and sub school leader meetings. Families are encouraged to discuss choices at parent-teacher interviews. Please contact the school to arrange an individual pathway conversation.
What are the three pathways from Year 10 into senior school?
From Year 10, students can enter: VCE (the academic pathway, leading to ATAR and university); VCE Vocational Major (the career-focused certificate pathway); or Head Start (a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship combining paid work with school). Full details are in the Rochester Secondary College Senior School Handbook.
