  • Develop persuasive writing skills in both written and spoken forms
  • Explore creative, analytical and reflective responses to challenging texts
  • Study text type conventions and adapt writing for specific audiences
  • Build vocabulary, grammar and editing skills to strengthen written work
Why We Offer This Subject

Strong literacy skills are the most transferable asset students can develop — Year 8 English challenges students to think more deeply about language and develop their own communication voice.

Skills Developed
Close reading and critical text analysis Persuasive and analytical essay writing Oral communication and debate Independent editing and self-evaluation
Assessment

Analytical essays, persuasive speeches and written arguments, creative responses and class discussion — regular individual feedback throughout.

Where This Leads

Year 8 → Year 9 → Year 10 English → VCE English (compulsory for VCE).

Related subjects: Humanities, Indonesian (Year 9 elective), ICT
Mathematics
Year 8 Core Subject

What You Will Learn
  • Extend number and algebra including linear equations and coordinate geometry
  • Apply measurement and geometry to real-world and multi-step problems
  • Investigate statistical data and probability with increasing sophistication
  • Develop mathematical reasoning and proof skills
  • Connect mathematical concepts across strands to solve unfamiliar problems
Why We Offer This Subject

Year 8 Mathematics is a critical bridge to Year 9, 10 and VCE — the reasoning habits and fluency developed here are essential for future mathematics success.

Skills Developed
Algebraic reasoning and equation solving Geometric and spatial thinking Statistical analysis and probability Multi-step mathematical problem-solving
Assessment

Topic tests, mathematical investigations, problem-solving tasks and classwork demonstrating both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding.

Where This Leads

Year 8 Mathematics leads into Year 9 Mathematics and ultimately all VCE Mathematics pathways: General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics.

Related subjects: Science, ICT
Science
Year 8 Core Subject
Year 8 Science builds on Year 7 through deeper investigation of energy, matter and living systems. Students use the particle model to explain matter, explore energy forms and transfers, and examine cells and body systems — while strengthening inquiry skills.
What You Will Learn
  • Investigate different forms of energy including renewable and non-renewable sources
  • Use the particle model to explain physical and chemical properties of substances
  • Explore chemical properties and basic reaction chemistry
  • Analyse structure and function of cells, organs and body systems
  • Apply the full science inquiry cycle: question, plan, conduct, analyse, communicate
Why We Offer This Subject

Year 8 Science builds the conceptual framework for understanding the physical, chemical and biological world — the direct foundation for all VCE science subjects.

Skills Developed
Scientific inquiry and experimental skills Conceptual model building and application Data analysis and evidence-based reasoning Scientific written and oral communication
Assessment

Laboratory reports, practical investigations, unit tests and inquiry projects demonstrating both content knowledge and scientific thinking.

Where This Leads

Year 8 → Year 9 Science → VCE Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Psychology.

Related subjects: Mathematics, Health & PE, Technology
Humanities
Year 8 Core Subject
Year 8 Humanities continues through History, Geography, Business and Economics, and Civics and Citizenship. Students investigate the medieval world, explore liveability, examine business dynamics, and study law and justice — developing increasingly sophisticated analytical skills.
What You Will Learn
  • Investigate the Middle Ages, feudalism and the age of early European exploration
  • Study place, liveability and how changing populations shape cities and regions
  • Explore the business environment, enterprising behaviour and economic decision making
  • Examine Australian laws, justice systems and concepts of identity, diversity and citizenship
  • Develop historical, geographic, economic and civic thinking and writing skills
Why We Offer This Subject

Humanities develops the capacity to understand and engage thoughtfully with the world — skills of critical analysis, research and perspective-taking are essential for any civic or professional career.

Skills Developed
Historical analysis and source evaluation Geographic and spatial thinking Economic and enterprise reasoning Civic literacy and written argument
Assessment

Analytical essays, source analysis tasks, research projects, inquiry reports and class presentations.

Where This Leads

Year 8 → Year 9 Humanities → Year 10 electives → VCE History, Geography, Legal Studies, Business Management.
