I had the pleasure of attending the Rochester Lions Youth of the Year Competition, to say I was overwhelmed with pride at the efforts of our students is an understatement. Congratulations to Seth McLure, Sarah Trewick, Casey Ryan and Robert Bessell for taking on the opportunity to participate in Lions Youth of the Year. Congratulations to Sarah Trewick for winning the Public Speaking section of the evening. Youth of the Year is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community.
The students are interviewed by a panel of judges with questions around their general knowledge and community involvement. Students are then required to respond to two impromptu prompts with a two minute time limit. Each student was then invited to present a five minute speech on a topic of their choice. Both Seth and Casey spoke about the value of education, Robert spoke about the impact social media is having on adolescents and Sarah’s speech evolved around ‘speaking from the heart’ when presenting a speech.
